Summit 3.0UNIVERSITY OF MALTA // Saturday March 25, 2023 // BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES BUILDING
The third edition of the Malta ALS/MND SUMMIT focused on risk factors triggering amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in island populations, with particular focus on Malta and Sicily. What are the similarities, differences, challenges and opportunities for ALS? The meeting was organised by the University of Malta ALS/MND Research Laboratory. Attendees included ALS patients and family members, clinicians, researchers, medical students, and biomedical students. The meeting was an in-person event and took place at Lecture Theatre BM402 on the Third Floor of the Biomedical Sciences Building, University of Malta Campus.
Speakers included Neurologist and Professor of Neurology Prof. Vincenzo La Bella from the ALS Clinical Research Centre at the University of Palermo (Italy) who gave the Keynote Lecture on the Epidemiological, Clinical and Genetic Landscape of ALS in Sicily. Neurologist and Clinical Researcher Dr. Rossella Spataro from the University of Palermo delivered the Clinical Lecture on Brain-Computer Interfaces for ALS. Neurogeneticist Prof. Ruben J Cauchi from the University of Malta gave a lecture on the Genetic Risk Factors for ALS in Malta. The conference also featured talks by researchers working at the University of Malta ALS/MND Research Lab including Dr. Paul Herrera, Maia Farrugia Wismayer, Rebecca Cacciottolo and Sylvana Tabone on different aspects of motor neuron disease including animal modelling, biobanking, gene hunting and Omics technologies.
